🗞️ We won't consider it breaking news that healthcare systems are stretched thin. But still, for the sake of it, because it's Tuesday and things are bad enough, we'll say it again. Healthcare systems are in bad shape.

Pandemic-induced burnout and staffing shortages have left one in four clinicians wanting to leave the workforce and a projected shortage of 18 million practitioners by 2030. If the data could sing, it would undoubtedly sound like the piercing screech of a knife on a glass bottle.

🌡️ Anyhow, that's not the only concern. Healthcare systems as a whole have caught a fever, but on a smaller scale, things aren't going so well for doctors and patients either.

Individual physicians are exhausted, and we know why. When asked what contributes most to their feelings of burnout, 31% of clinicians cite "paperwork". Specifically, they share their deep-seated hatred of the dreaded and infamous EHR. The most common reason for dissatisfaction with the clinical leviathan is lost productivity - spending more time on documentation (85%) and seeing fewer patients (66%).
Speaking of patients, healthcare isn't a smooth ride for them either. With an ageing population and the explosion of chronic diseases, the need to be heard and cared for with empathy is increasingly critical: today, patients only remember 15% of what is said during a consultation.

🥁 All of this to say that we can't go on like this. Physicians can't continue to spend their days fighting waiting room bottlenecks, clicking endlessly in their EHR to document something that should be documented for them. And patients can't continue to feel disconnected from their physicians.

Where does this bring us?

That would mean less time documenting, more time caring. And isn't that why you became a doctor? And what patients want from you?
